Imaginative Animal Sculptures

Do your students love to imagine new animals with specific features and skills only they could have imagined? Explore some Art History by studying a sculpture from approximately the 1st millennium B.C. with your students, then help your students imagine and plan their own animal sculpture! This multimodal lesson is packed with creative prompts and possibilities to enjoy with your students, including suggestions for links to literacy, social studies and science.

This is a 2-part lesson. Part 1 lesson prompts students to make sketches of their own imagined animal, before moving on to Part 2, where your students develop a personality and character traits for an animal of their own invention. This activity explores the many ways clay can be used to create or suggest form, and can span the course of multiple sessions or weeks if you choose.
